Claire Lowrie joined the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry at the University of Wollongong in 2014. Claire’s research concerns the history of labour, migration, and colonialism in tropical northern Australia and Southeast Asia. Claire has written extensively on the history of domestic service. She is currently undertaking two ARC Discovery Projects. The first (with Julia Martinez and Gregor Benton) is a history of Chinese indentured labour in the colonial Asia Pacific region. The second (with Victoria Haskins and Swapna Banerjee) is a history of travelling Indian ayahs and Chinese amahs (nursemaids) within the British empire. Claire’s work is transcolonial and comparative in focus. Claire’s teaching specialisations include Australian and Southeast Asian history, global and transnational history, labour history, environmental history and the history of colonialism and imperialism. She has previously worked at the University of Sydney, the University of Newcastle (Australia) and the University of Auckland.
